Which
mosquito trap and repellent is best for you?
|
There are 2 parts to the best mosquito strategy, mosquito traps and mosquito repellent devices. Follow this guide to select the best mosquito defense for your situation. Mosquito traps are your first line of defense for average and larger size yards. The mosquito trap that will successfully trap and kill mosquitoes in your yard depends mainly upon two factors: 1. The size of your outdoor area, and 2. Whether you have Midges (also called gnats or no-see-ums) or Asian Tiger mosquitoes. These are out 24 hours a day. All of the traps we sell are very effective. Choose the right trap according to your situation below. Mosquito repellent devices work for those that escape the traps and are the only choice for balconies and very small yards. Everyone should use mosquito repellent devices. They are inexpensive and work very well. |
| Midges (No-Seeums) & Asian Tiger Mosquitoes | ||
| Asian Tiger mosquitoes are black and white striped (hence Tiger) that are very aggressive biters. Unlike most other mosquitoes which are mainly present only at dawn and dusk, Asian Tigers are active all night and day. As are midges. So you should operate the trap 24 hours a day. Use the Combo lure. In tests, it attracts many more than the other lures. This also applies to midges, gnats and no-see-ums. | ![]() |

| Yard Size | ||
Balcony, patio or very small yard (less than 20 feet to your border). If the edge of your property is 20 feet or less from the outdoor area you use, do not get a mosquito trap. Use the mosquito repellent devices. A mosquito trap will attract mosquitoes too close to you. People are more attractive than any trap. Go to the Cognito or Thermacell page for details. Our first choice would be the Cognito. We recommend that you use these with a trap in larger yards.

Use mosquito repellent devices only. |

Small Yard (20 to 30 feet to the border from the area you use). Use the mosquito repellent devices and get a PV 440 trap. Put the mosquito trap at least 20 feet from you toward the source of the mosquitoes. If you have Asian Tiger mosquitoes, use both octenol and Lurex3 lures. If mosquitoes come from 2 directions, you may need 2 traps. These mosquito traps do not use CO2 so they do not attract from a wide area. They do use lights, so they must be in a place that is visible to the mosquitoes. They will also catch many other bothersome insects. |

Larger yard (30 feet or more to the border) with ASIAN TIGER mosquitoes. Use the mosquito repellent devices and get a CO2 based trap. Run it continuously, 24 hours per day. Put the trap at least 30 feet away from you toward the source of the mosquitoes. We particularly recommend the CT100 (upper picture). It is less expensive, brand new, and operates 24 hours a day. Use the Combo lure which includes lactic acid and octenol. It requires a propane refill every 21 days. If you prefer a cordless mosquito trap, get the SV5100 (lower picture). It also operates 24 hours, and is self-powered (needs no cord). The SV5100 every 15-18 days. Use the Combo lure and the additional TacTrap lures to lure and kill mosquitoes. Use one mosquito trap every 150 feet on the perimeter of your yard toward the mosquitoes as a rule of thumb. If the mosquitoes come from more than one side, you will need more traps. If mosquito activity is heavy, you may need more. |

Larger yard (30 feet or more to the border) with NO ASIAN TIGER mosquitoes. Use the mosquito repellent devices and get a CO2 based trap. You can use any of the three. The MT350 is the only mosquito trap that has a timer. Consequently, you can operate the unit at dawn and dusk only, which is when many mosquito species are active. A tank of propane then lasts much longer. Use the lure designed for use with the MT350/PV440 to lure and kill mosquitoes. The Mosquito Vacuum is less expensive and smaller. Its Combo lure works well for all mosquitoes. It will operate 24 hours a day. The SV5100 also runs 24 hours, but requires no electricity, so no cord. You fill the tank more often. Use the Combo lure to lure and kill mosquitoes. Use one mosquito trap every 150 feet on the perimeter of your yard toward the mosquitoes as a rule of thumb. If the mosquitoes come from more than one side, you will need more traps. If mosquito activity is heavy, you may need more. |
Use one of the CO2 mosquito traps and repellent devices. | |

| Mosquito Trap Placement | ||||
Mosquito trap placement is one of the most important considerations. The best mosquito trap poorly placed will catch hardly anything at all. A CO2 mosquito machine should be placed at least 35 feet from where people linger. The mosquito machine should be between you and the source of the mosquitoes in a shady area. Preferably, it should be as close to the source as possible and up-wind of the mosquitoes. You are trying to attract the mosquitoes to it before they perceive you. Remember that CO2 can be sensed around 100 feet from the source (you and the mosquito trap) and the more people, the more CO2. If you have more than one mosquito source or a long property line bordering on an area that harbors mosquitoes, you may need 2 or more. Figure one for every 150 feet of perimeter to successfully trap and kill mosquitoes completely. If they come from both sides of the property, you will need at least 2 mosquito killer machines. Once you place them, monitor the catch. Remember that mosquitoes are more prevalent right after a rain, and then decrease in numbers until the next rain, when another hatch of the same or different species may occur. If you are not catching many, move the mosquito machine to another location and increase the operation time to kill mosquitoes more efficiently. CO2 is heavier than air, so do not place it in a depression. The best gauge is your perception of the number of bites you get after placing the mosquito killer machine. It will not kill all mosquitoes present, but it should make your outdoor life much more tolerable and continue to reduce the population over time. |
| Mosquito Repellent Devices | ||
Mosquito repellent devices are inexpensive and effective. For most uses, we recommend the Cognito. One mosquito repellent cartridge lasts 15 24-hour days. No flame, no muss, no monitoring. You need at least 2 mosquito repellent devices to get enough repellent in the air to be effective. One is not enough. If mosquito activity is moderate or more, you will also need one or more mosquito traps. |

You may also consider the Thermacell products. They are available as an appliance, lantern or new Patio lantern with led lights. The appliance is the most portable of all mosquito repellent devices. You can put it in your pocket for an outdoor concert, etc., and carry your own personal zone of protection. |
