Outdoors: Generally, using both mosquito traps and mosquito repellents does the best job. Mosquito traps work by attracting mosquitoes and then capturing them. Mosquito repellents work by putting out a mist of natural non-toxic substances that repels them. You place repellents next to you, and the traps between you and the source of the mosquitoes, at least 30 feet away from you. If you do not have the space to put a trap at least 30 feet (the distance a mosquito can see) from where you congregate, use a mosquito repellent, but no trap. See our guide below.

Indoors: If you have mosquitoes and flies inside, look at the DynaTrap Indoors and the Intellitrap. They attract and capture all flying insects by UV light. Put a Cognito outside by your doors or other openings if mosquitoes are getting inside.

Traveling: When you are outdoors for extended periods, or away from home, we highly recommend using Mosquito Patches. They are safe, effective and cheap. No oils, smells or mess.

Recommended Mosquito Traps and Repellents by Yard Size

Tiny Yard (30 feet or less to the border from the area you use) If the edge of your property is 30 feet or less from the outdoor area you use, do not get a mosquito trap. You will just attact more to bite you. Use only the mosquito repellent devices. We particularly recommend 2 or more Terminix AllClear Lanterns or the Mosquito Sentry.

Small Yard (30-50 feet to the border from the area you use). For mosquito repellents, we recommend 2 or more Terminix AllClear Lanterns or the Mosquito Sentry. For a mosquito trap, get an Intellitrap or one of the Dynatraps. Put the mosquito trap at least 30 feet from you. Mosquitoes can see around 30 feet. These mosquito traps use UV lights, so they must be in a place that is visible to the mosquitoes. You want the mosquitoes to see the trap before they see you. These traps will also catch many other bothersome insects. If your yard is this size, do not use a CO2 based trap because it attracts from about 100 feet. You will just attract more to your area.

Larger yard (50 feet or more to the border) Use the Mosquito Sentry for your patio or congregating space or the Terminix AllClear Backyard Mister for larger areas. Select one or more of these CO2 based traps. Put the trap at least 30 feet away from you toward the source of the mosquitoes. Why? Because the trap attracts and then captures. If it is close to people, the mosquitoes will prefer the people to the trap. Look at the trap placement video below to determine the best place for your trap. The only corded CO2 trap we carry, the Mosquito Magnet Patriot, catches about as many as the more expensive Mosquito Magnet models. Very Large Yards Use the Mosquito Sentry for your patio or congregating space or the Terminix AllClear Backyard Mister for larger areas. The best CO2 mosquito traps can attract from about 100 feet down wind. So you need multiples if you have a large area. Select one of the cordless traps, either one of the SkeeterVacs or cordless Mosquito Magnets. Place one mosquito trap every 150 feet or less on the perimeter of your yard toward the mosquitoes. If the mosquitoes come from more than one side, you will need more traps. If mosquito activity is heavy, you may also need more. About Mosquito Repellents for Yard, Deck and Patio

These effective non-toxic mosquito repellents work against all biting insects, including mosquitoes, gnats and midges. They work very well. Unlike toxic repellents, they cause no harm. Choose the size you need, and then go to the product page for details. For a very small patio or deck, we recommend 2 or more Terminix AllClear Lanterns. You must be within 9 feet downwind of the Lantern to be protected. You set it to mist every 5, 7.5 or 10 minutes. Mosquito Cognitos can also be used for small spaces, but you will need more of them. Two of these will give you about the same coverage as 1 Mister Lantern. If you find mosquitoes indoors, we recommend placing a Cognito by all entrances. The Mosquito Sentry covers around 30' x 30' or 900 Sq. Ft. and up to 15 people. Totally non-toxic. It mists continually while on. The Terminix AllClear Backyard Mister protects an area of up to 2000 sq. ft. (e.g. 40' x 50'). You spray the area with a non-toxic solution for 4 minutes every 2 hours. Terminix AllClear Lantern Video The Lantern mists periodically as shown in this video. The Backyard Mister also sends out a mist, but it covers a much wider area.
