CT100 (Mosquito Vacuum) Summary: The  CT100 mosquito trap is brand new for 2008. It incorporates the latest research in mosquito trap technology and has undergone one full year of consumer testing.  It operates continuously, 24 hours a day. It uses a rigid Bug Basket (at the top) which is is located before the fan (on other models, the bugs get chopped up by the fan). This is much cleaner.  In tests by independent agencies, it outperformed several Mosquito Magnet models.  See the tests below.

It uses propane and electricity.  Propane creates CO2, moisture and heat, all mosquito attractants. Electricity (via a low voltage cord) powers the fan.  It has a brand new Combo mosquito lure which contains both Octenol and Lactic Acid and is attractive to all mosquitoes.

The Mosquito Vacuum represents a new leader in price for performance due to its design and new lure.   Click here to go to the order page.

  CT100 Operation and Attractants   •

OPERATION    Operating the CT100 is very simple.  You plug in the 30 foot low voltage cord, put a combo lure in the holder (low front), attach and turn on the propane and push a button.  It has one button operation, with warning lights for low propane, full Bug Basket (on top) and a reminder light when it is time to replace the Octenol/lactic acid lure. We recommend that you turn it off in heavy rain.

ATTRACTANTS   The CT100 works somewhat differently than most other traps.  Like the Mosquito Magnets, it uses 5 known mosquito attractants, which are CO2, Octenol and Lactic Acid, (if you purchase the combination lure), heat, and moisture.  Unlike other traps, the CT100 does not use black UV light, LEDs, or high power noisy killing grids. Without lights it does not target beneficial insects such as moths and dragonflies, but does attract mosquitoes, all biting flies and gnats (also known as midges or noseeums).

CO2 reaches the farthest from the trap, over 100 feet depending upon the wind.  Octenol and Lactic Acid are perceived closer to the unit as the next lures at around 30-50 feet.  Finally, as the mosquito gets within a few feet of the trap, heat and moisture complete the fatal attraction.  Female mosquitoes enter a large opening in the trap and are sucked into an enclosed tray from which they cannot escape.

PLACEMENT  This is one of the most important considerations.  CO2 traps should be placed at least 30 feet from where people linger, preferably.  It should be between you and the source of the mosquitoes in a shady area.  Preferably, it should be as close to the source as possible and up-wind of the mosquitoes.  You are trying to attract the mosquitoes to it before they perceive you.  Remember that CO2 can be sensed around 100 feet from the source (you and the trap) and the more people, the more CO2.  If you have more than one source or a long property line bordering on an area that harbors mosquitoes, you may need 2 or more.  Figure one for every 150 feet of perimeter. And if they come from both sides of the property, you will need at least 2.

Once you place them, monitor the catch.  Remember that mosquitoes are more prevalent right after a rain, and then decrease in numbers until the next rain, when another hatch of the same or different species may occur.  If you are not catching many, move the machine to another location and increase the operation time.  CO2 is heavier than air, so do not place it in a depression.  The best gauge is your perception of the number of bites you get after placing the machine.  It will not kill every mosquito, but it should make your outdoor life much more tolerable and continue to reduce the population over time.

We also recommend that you add one of the Cognito or Thermacell repellent products for a complete package in any case.  The traps kill the mosquitoes and the repellents keep any that remain away from you.

  TESTS   •

The Mosquito Vacuum has been tested extensively by professionals and one year of consumer tests.  Here are some of the test results.

GEORGIA CAGE TESTS

Researchers at an independent facility in Georgia tested the CT100 Mosquito Vacuum mosquito trap against several other traps including the Mosquito Magnet Defender and Liberty Plus, which in previous tests had outperformed many other traps. These tests were conducted in 2006-2007 in large screen cages. In these tests, 100 mosquitoes were released into a large cage, and the trapped count was taken after one hour. 2 tests were performed each day and the results averaged. The CT100 Mosquito Vacuum outperformed the Mosquito Magnet Defender and Liberty in all tests. It caught around 60% of the mosquitoes released within an hour, much more than the others.

GEORGIA 2007 TEST

Another test was conducted in Georgia during July 2007 to see how well the CT100 Mosquito Vacuum would hold up against the Mosquito Magnet Defender and Liberty.  This graph compares the percentage caught by each machine of mosquitoes, gnats and other biting insects.

   FAQs

Q. What makes this trap better?   A. New for 2008. Improves on older designs. More reliable. Propane igniter problem on other brands is fixed. Less expensive.  Combo lure particularly effective against Asian Tiger mosquitoes.
Q. Is CO2 safe?   A. This is the same gas that is used in soda fountains, keg beer, and sparkling water. It is what we exhale when we breathe.  The CT100 should not be used indoors, however.
Q. Where do I get Propane?   A. Propane is available at many gas stations and hardware stores. It is very easy to find.
Q. How often do I have to refill the tank?   A.Approximately every 21 days.
Q. What is the warranty period? A. Manufacturer's one year limited warranty.
Q. Where do you place the Mosquito Vacuum? A. At least 30' from where people congregate, between you and the source of the insects, preferably close to the source and upwind. See placement instructions.
Q. What is the effective range of the unit? A. CO2 can attract insects from over 100 feet downwind.
